Quaternary surfactants are an established kind of surfactants since many years. Due to their broad microbicidal spectrum, low toxicity, and good surface activity they are used in big amounts as biocides. Their ability to remain on the surface leads in addition to extraordinary application properties. This substantivity of the quaternaries is made use of in softening, gloss or hydrophobing formulations. Established examples of application are fabric softener, textile and paper pre treatment or hair conditioner. Another important field of application of cationic surfactants are rinse aid formulations in automatic car wash stations. These rinse aids help to remove remaining water on the car's surface by hydrophobing it and repelling the water film spontaneously. Together with components that are necessary to make the quats water soluble and the formulation stable other care agents can be added in order to protect the paint against environmental influences and to achieve a glossy vehicle.
