The most challenging requirement in designing side curtain airbags with roll-over protection is that the system must stay inflated for more than 5 seconds. To meet this stringent performance requirement, permeability through the entire system (which includes the cushion and the seam) must be controlled effectiveley. Through this study, the authors show that seam elongation is as important a factor in gauging seam performance as seam strength and seam. Fiber properties such as tenacity and shrinkage can be optimized to minimize the seam elongation, hence reduce the leakage through the seam. Based on these learnings, DuPont is introducing the T-749 family of Nylon 6.6 fiber which has been designed specifically to meet the high performance requirements of side curtain airbags.
