Osaka Gas has been constructing a transmission gas pipeline of 7 MPa in maximum pressure 750 mm in diameter across Osaka Bay Area (from Senkboku LNG (liquid natural gas) Terminal to Hokko Plant) since 1994 in order to fulfil the incrasing gas demand of Osaka District, the second largest megalopolis in Japan. The pipeline construction is scheduled for completion in December, 2000. The technical problems on the gas pipeline construction by shield tunnel under the seabed were solved by the following measures: The appropriate layout of flexible segments protects the shield tunnel from the destructive force caused by the subsidence of reclaimed lands. The elastic washer of the segment joint secures the sufficient anti-seismic strength through mitigating the axial tensile caused by an earthquake. And the flexible segment between the vertical shafts and the shield tunnel also protects the shield tunnel against the seismic-destructive power. Both automatic welding system and automatic coating system give us high quality and cost reduction as they can constantly display excellent workmanship and also proceed the operating efficiency. The corrosion protection system by the rectifier and the periodical gas-leakage detection by using gas-collecting pipes ensures and verifies the integirty of the gas transmission pipeline.
