Future automotive concepts will be more and more influenced by limitations of fuel consumption. Light weight car body construction as well as engines with better fuel efficiency have to be realized to fulfill these requirements. Laser technology is used to join light weight materials, to machine ceramic tool materials, to drill non-concentric holes in injection nozzles, or to harden steel surfaces. For this, examples are shown for the application of CO2, light/diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers, the ''dual focus technology'' in aluminium laser welding and for soldering or hardening processes. Future requirements for laser systems are defined as to increase the availability during operation, decrease investment, and reduce overall operating costs.
