As the offshore industry moves into deeper waters, the need for a combined use of numerical and experimental tools becomes more acute. This raises the problem of producing relatable, if not identical, wave systems in both tanks. Some results from a French research project on this topic are given. Emphasis is put on the spurious long waves that appear when the wavemaker is switched on and off. A simple theoretical model is proposed and validated through comparisons with results from experiments and from a second-order numerical wavetank. A new type of beach is proposed, consisting in a quasi-horizontal, perforated plate, below the free surface. The performance of such beaches is analyzed through calculations and model testing.
