Contour look - signal lamps using light guide technology

On the basis of light guide systems consisting of a light source, the light guide itself and a light output device, it is possible to create completely new visual appearances and light distributions as well as new thermal and mechanical product characteristics in the area of vehicle lighting. The light sources that come into question in this respect are reflectors with tungsten filament bulbs and also LEDs. The light guides can be made from plastic or glass optical fibres, or can even be constructed from these materials in one solid piece, as a so-called solid fibre. Using the various constructional layouts developed by Hella over the past few years, it has become possible to realise very individual light output devices. Following introduction of the first series production applications in the area of interior illumination and surrounding light, it has now also become possible to implement vehicle signal lamp functions using this technology. This article will describe the main principles that apply to laying out these new systems. System components and possible product characteristics will be explained with the help of selected examples and presented in the form of model components and design studies.
