Monolithic ceramics lack the fracture toughness necessary to be strongly considered for most structural applications on manned flight vehicles. However, fracture toughness can be engineered into a ceramic by embedding continuous fibers in the ceramic matrix. Embedded fibers cause the ceramic to fail gradually rather than catastrophically. This engineered material is called a ceramic matrix composite (CMC). CMC turbine disks have the ability to withstand damage, provide increased damping capacity and reduce weight, creating a robust rocket engine.
