Traditionally welding has been regarded with suspicion by the designers of aircraft. As a result, practically all aircraft is assembled by rivets and by sophisticated fastening systems. Safety has been well established using that approach. However, some industrial segments of the aircraft industry are re-examining welding as an assembly tool. Electron beam welding is being used in the fabrication of titanium fuselages of new fighter aircraft in Europe, laser beam welding is being seriously considered as the assembly tool in the fabrication of the next generation of jumbo jets. Elsewhere, friction stir welding and the use of scandium to improve the strength and weldability of high strength aluminum alloys are both gaining interest.
