One of the most promising concepts in the field of railway vehicle systems is the shuttle concept, which, at some day, could replace present day fixed time-table schedules by a demand driven individual transportation. The realisation of a shuttle train transportation system is hardly possible using conventional rolling stock, as each shuttle has to be driven and braked individually. It is therefore worthwhile to investigate alternative driving systems like e.g. magnetic propulsion by linear motors mounted in the track as in the case of the TRANSRAPID or the Tokyo metropolitan line 12. The potential technical advantages of the linear magnetic traction and the promising perspectives of a shuttle based transportation system lead to the formation of the project group 'Neue Bahntechnik Paderborn'. It is the aim of this project group to develop the concept of a novel railway vehicle system, called the 'Paderborn Rapid'. In this place, special interest is taken to the active steering system for the bogie. The authors discuss the advantages of radially adjusted wheels and show how the adjustment can be achieved using an active steering system. The behaviour of the vehicle is demonstrated using numerical simulation techniques.
