New applications of networked electronic system in vehicles are possible by the availability of micro controlers with flash EPROM on chip. The networked systems were launched to reduce the load on the wire harness and the number of connectors in vehicles. Expanded requirements are visible in the area of the complexity of networked systems, the application functions, the diagnosis, the quiescence current consumption, the ground shift, etc. The stand-alone circuits which have been available so far cannot fully exploit the overall capacities of networked systems - intelligent system circuits are required. The monolithic integration concept 'System Basis Chip' which will be presented in the following was developed at DaimlerChrysler and contains mainly the approaches to fulfil the requirements driven by body control networks with more than 12 electronic control units (ECU). The overall concept is based on a sophisticated fault processing strategy (failsafe; fail silence) which complies with the requirements of a system FMEA under all operating conditions. Some integrated circuit manufacturers do convert the concept into products. First engineering samples are available since the end of 1998.
