Water leaks on vehicles have been a long-standing problem to the world's automotive manufacturers, who have traditionally used water test methods to leak test cars. An automated system uses specially designed sniffer head attached to robots which track the cars on a moving conveyor to 'sniff out' gas leaks emanating from helium which has been pumped into the car. The project entailed tracking a moving conveyor, accurately locating the vehicle, developing the noncontact sensor, and operating the robots on a manned assembly track, handling a range of body types.
