The objective of this program were to identify control needs for residential gas appliances (range/ovens and water heaters) and recommend to GRI necessary research and development programs aimed at eliminating controls-related constraints in the commercialization, marketing and sales of gas appliances. Current appliance designsexpected to remain in the market-place and new technologies being developed for commercialization over the next ten years were identified. The control functions required for these appliances were investigated, and a list of control needs was developed with the help of gas appliance manufacturers. These control needs were then analyzed and conceptual designs for hardware were developed. These hardware concepts were compared with new controls being offered in appliances sold in Japan. (Kursetz)
