In order to design a propeller with good cavitation characteristics as well as propulsive performance, a practical and theoretical design method which gives optimum blade profile, pitch distribution and camber distribution has been developed. Its effectiveness has been examined by the propeller for D.W. 60000LT Bulk Carrier. The following results were obtained: A practical design method based on vortex theory was developed for the MAU-type propeller, which is widely used in Japan. The design was proven effective with model tests. It was shown that the hydro-dynamic pitch angle based on Dr. van Manen's criteria should be corrected so as to reduce tip loading. Propellers designed using this method were proven to be superior in propulsive efficiency as well as in cavitation characteristics.
