A full-scale experiment was conducted in order to assess the safety aspects of a semi-membrane LPG carrier constructed by Hitachi Zosen. Stress, deformation and other factors were measured. In this paper, stress levels and the structural behavior of the semi-membrane tank and the ship's hull structure are discussed. The results have proved the three-dimensional analysis adopted for the shlp's hull strength to be sufficiently accurate. A simplified analysis method is also proposed to replace the three-dimensional method. Considerably high stresses were found in the saddle bracket and the tank top plate. Fatigue strength and fracture mechanics analyses were carried out for the high stress part, and counter-measures were put into practice to eliminate the problems. This study confirmed the fact that Hitachi Zosen's semi-membrane LPG carrier meets structural safety requirements.
