The first unit of the IHI-SULZER 9RLA90 type diesel engine, a new type of the SULZER large-bored slow speed engine, has been completed at IHI's Aioi Diesel Engine Works. Main features of the RLA engine series are lower fuel oil consumption, lower speed and higher output than those of the current RND-M series. This engine, with an output of 32400 PS at 98 rpm, has the highest output among the RLA 90 series to be manufactured so far in the world. A series of experimental tests on the engine started on October 1, 1979 and continued for 2 months to examine performance characteristics, temperatures and stresses of the main components, etc., which came to an end satisfactorily with the result that the specific fuel consumption we were most interested in was 137,2 g/PS-h at MCR and 136,7 g/PS-h at normal service output. Moreover, when the automatic injection timing device was put to service at normal service output, the specific fuel consumption showed the amazingly low value of 135,3 g/PS-h. This engine has been installed in 'JAPAN APOLLO', a high speed computer ship owned by Japan Line, Ltd. and put into service on April 11,1980. (Wassmann)
