Moisture diffusion analysis (MDA) is applied to quantitatively characterize profiles of variable microstructure and strength degradation in graphite-epoxy composite SR4 which are created by localized moisture exposure and subsequent thermal cycling. In regions of high microstructure and strength degradation non-Fickian diffusion is evidenced by bulk water penetration into open microcracks followed by accelerated molecular diffusion in the regions between adjacent microcracks. Analysis of the non-Fickian diffusion process coupled with established analysis of strength degradation appears as a direct approach to coupling MDA and ultrasonic surveillance ot quantitative predictive criteria for microstructure and strength degradation. This study shows that moisture diffusion analysis (MDA) can be effectively applied to scan the area or length of a composite panel to locate regions of microstructure degradation and resultant loss of internal strength.
