Of the several control system techniques available for subsea production applications, there is usually one that is best suited for each specific installation. If choices to obtain this best control technique are classified according to operating objectives, oilfield geometry, and operational criteria, system selection is not difficult. By systematically developing a control system based on such choices, along with an effective guide, the design engineer will avoid the misdirected effort and cost involved in specification of control techniques that are not well suited to the planned application. This paper will describe one such simplified method for selecting subsea production controls to obtain operating objectives. The method, if followed by producers, can help to avoid specification of inappropriate control systems. (Hannebauer)
