The fluctuation of the induction period for ignition as well as the randomness of the ignition position in a hydrogen-oxygen mixture behind reflected shock waves was statistically investigated. It was proved that the ignition was a stochastic phenomenon by comparing the ignition probability of the mixture obtaine from the histogram of the induction period and the obtaine from the histogram of the ignition position. The explosion limits of the hydrogen-oxygen mixture, the so-called explosion peninsula, was explained by the stochastic theory in which the mixture has a certain constant ignition probability. Further, the quantity effect of ignition was also discussed by the same theory and applying this effect to the electrical spark-ignition-plug a detour-spark-ignition-plug was developed. It was demonstrated that an automobile spark-ignition engine using detour-spark plugs can be stably driven using very lean mixture, keeping its fuel consumption relatively low and exhaust gas clean.
