The use of innovative flexible automation techniques in aerospace manufacturing has been slow in coming because of inherent limitations such as low production rates in small lots, complex fabrication methods, high accuracy requirements, and many changes in design. General Dynamics has made inroads into overcoming these limitations by group processing families of parts to achieve economies of scale and a significant gain in labor productivity. Robots are beginning to provide the flexibility needed to achieve cost-effective automated work centers that can be used to fabricate a variety of aerospace parts and to perform other complex processing functions.
