To minimize risk to the overall B-1B effort, the Air Force has chosen to program the offensive avionics systems for the first eight aircraft in an old standby dialect of the Jovial higher order language, J3B. Preferring to let some other program incur the costs and delays of developing mature J73 compilers, the Air Force's early B-1Bs will have 80 to 85 percent of their software written in J3B, with the remainder in a faster, but more difficult to maintain, assembly language.
