The H4640 is a fully synthesized SSB MF/HF transceiver requiring only a power amplifier to form the basis of a simplex or half-duplex communications system. The equipment has been designed for relatively harsh naval environments and is operationally compatible with both the new H1071 MF/HF Amplifier and the existing range of ICS3 equipment. Particular attention has been paid in the design to ensure ease and flexibility of operation and easy access and maintainability without the cost of replaceable modules. The mechanical design allows for rapid replacement of individual primary units in the event of a failure and for ease of sub-equipping to provide a transmitter drive or receiver when desired. Control of the transceiver in operation may be made locally, via an ergonomically designed front panel, or removely. Remote control may be exercised via digitally selectable preset channels or via a digital data interface giving limited control of transceiver facilities.
