Presents a detailed account of an automated system developed for the administrative handling of the charges and dispatch of freight traffic over the French railway network. To take into account the complexity of the operations involved three basic categories are considered. These are separately detailed, particular features are noted, and the methods of treatment explained. The three types of operations ultimately result in the drawing up of the relevant documentation and its dispatch to a central computer. The equipment provided for local offices, and comprising data transmission units linked with the data network is described. The various phases in the development, and progressive putting into service of the project are explained. It is noted that each local system is connected to the data network but is free to function as an independent unit under its own control.
