Studies the possibility of using a thyristor high-voltage circuit breaker to protect the convertor of a traction substation. In this role, the thyristor switch offers a number of advantages over oil circuit breakers: its stability and speed are an order of magnitude greater, it is noiseless in operation, it generates no switching surges, it places less strain on the transformer and it facilitates 'programming' of the convertor. For these and other reasons, the thyristor switch opens the way to radical redesign of 10kV switchgear.
