Adjustable speed ac drives are now available for direct drive high power and high speed applications traditionally powered by steam turbines. An example of this equipment is described with the test results obtained from the drive system. The electric ac drive is significantly more efficient, compact, accurate and flexible than all other prime movers. Tests on the high speed electric drives system confirmed theoretical predictions on losses, performance and operation. The system proved to be constructed in a way which provided the customer the best use of available volume. Electric adjustable speed drives should be considered for all high speed variable speed compressors.
