Modern military airplanes require low radar cross section (RCS) to minimize detection. The RCS reduction is mainly achieved by shaping of the airplane and by using radar absorbing material (RAM). Among the remaining RCS 'offenders', the jet intake stands out. It is known from experimental studies that the RCS of the jet intake can sometimes be reduced by coating a thin layer of lossy material at the interior wall of the intake. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical analysis for this RCS-reduction method. The intake is modelled by an open-ended circular cylinder terminated by a perfect electric conductor (PEC) which simulates the engine blades. We do realize that this model is a simple-minded approximation of practical intakes. Nevertheless, the circular cylinder geometry enables us to carry out a rigorous modal analysis for the fields inside the cavity, and pinpoint the type of coating material that is most effective in the RCS reduction.
