Two transition modes combustion/deflagration/detonation have been proved to exist in porous reactive media, which are highly confined in steel tubes. One mode presents a transition shock/detonation, e.g. in a RDX-wax, the other shows a progressive and steady acceleration of the combustion wave until detonation in a spherical double-base powder. We investigated propagation of the compression waves in front of the combustion front with Manganin gages and strain gages, and we showed that the explosive bed is quasi-elastic whereas the powder bed undergoes intense mechanical work. The resulting difference in energy dissipation in front of the combustion front may be responsible for the different behaviour of these two reactive media. If the mechanical properties of the spherical powder are changed by crushing, it is shown that it can also undergo a transition shock/detonation.
