Changes to flight stations and crew systems are becoming revolutionary rather than evolutionary. This is being driven by the need for new airborne systems to accommodate projected air traffic control and emerging military mission systems, problems of poor reliability/maintainability of electromechanical systems, the high cost of aircrew members, and the desire of the operators to use modern technologies. Judicious application of new technologies can greatly enhance new aircraft. As part of the overall effort, the Pilot's Desk Flight Station design is being incorporated into flight simulation research facilities at NASA Langley, NASA Ames, and the Lockheed-Georgia Company. This baseline design represents a point from which to begin further research and development of crew systems. When interfaced with air traffic control system models and military command and control systems, these facilities will provide full mission capability for researching issues affecting transport aircraft flight stations and crew systems of the mid-to-late 1990s. The architecture of the system is designed to provide the utmost flexibility in exploring the multitude of research issues which face us. The simulators presently have partial capability and are scheduled to be fully completed during 1986.
