In the past a number of Local Authorities have modified their fixed time UTC systems to allow an element of Vehicle Actuation (VA) to operate within the constraints of the fixed time plans. Now that some Authorities have added SCOOT capability to their systems it is appropriate to assess the reasons for the former modification. This paper describes some of the benefits obtained from using VA under computer control, with both fixed time and SCOOT. Examples are quoted from the first SCOOT sub-area in West Yorkshire, the Northgate signal network in Wakefield.
