The paper examines the sensing of flow angularity as applied to the determination of the angle-of-attack parameter in an aerospace vehicle, wind tunnel and turbine powerplant, and hydronautical applications. Direct sensing techniques that employ stationary two- and three-dimensional sensors are discussed. The success of an angle-of-attack system strongly depends upon the accuracy with which the angle-of-attack parameter can be measured. Ways of measuring angle of attack include both direct and indirect sensing techniques. This paper examines the direct sensing approach and in particular that of stationary sensing.
