Compact receivers have been developed for reception of SIR-B signals for several reasons: Mission monitoring is becoming easier for the people performing the field tests; Image processing can be performed easier, when the antenna pattern of the SAR is measured during the overflight; Determiniation of signal penetration through vegetation canopy can be done by applying such receivers, and finally it is possible to determine the soil penetration of the SAR-signals by burying such receivers and measuring the field strength as a function of depth in areas of very dry soil, such as in deserts. A discussion of these applications and a description of the receiver concept and the data collection system are presented. Some design constraints are considered and some performance characteristics of the hardware are discussed.
