A technique for the conceptual design of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems is described. At this level of design, the principal issues are resolution and spatial coverage. Basic geometric and coverage trade offs and restraints are presented, intended to facilitate constructive dialogue between applications specialists and radar systems people. Examples are drawn from SEASAT, ERS-1, and RADARSAT.
