The equipment described in this paper was developed for the Air Force's Modular Automatic Test Equipment (MATE) program and applied to the A-10 Inertial Navigation System Intermediate Avionics Test Station (IATS). Communications between the station controller and the various instruments and subsystems within a MATE system is via an IEEE-488 instrumentation bus. The MATE program also specifies that the language used on the bus shall be the Control Interface Intermediate Language (CIIL). The MATE program also specifies that confidence test (CNF) and Internal Self-test (IST) commands from the station controller shall cause a MATE Test Replaceable Unit (TRU) to relay isolate its interface from the test system and to perform a series of built-in tests (BIT) to verify the TRU's operability. Should any failure be detected then the TRU shall be capable of diagnosing the fault and isolating to a single Shop Replaceable Unit (SRU) and shall report back to the main system identifying the faulty SRU. These testability criteria are an integral part of the MATE program. This paper shall discuss how Litton's MATE Multi-Function Unit (MFU) and Direct Current Programmer Unit (DCPU) satisfy the testability criteria of the MATE system.
