Excessive workload demands are currently being placed on pilots' visual and manual response capabilities, especially during time critical flight mission segments. This experimental evaluation investigates alternative means of presenting and responding to information by using speech recognition and generation. The candidate task environment investigated the integration of a speech interactive system with a prototype automatic target recognizer. The simulated scenario involved an attack helicopter in a pop-up maneuver during target search. The pilot interactions with the target screener include navigation coordinate entry, activation of targeting mode, selection of target type and appropriate weapon preparation. These pilot interactions were evaluated using different modalities of input and output and conventional visual-manual transactions; speech recognition input with visual prompting; and speech recognition and generation in a dialogue format. Evaluations of the three pilot interaction modalities during simultaneous flight control activity indicated improved flight control performance during target recognizer tasks performed by speech interaction. At the individual targeting task level, voice interactive functions showed equivalent task performance if not better than visual-manual entry even for the simplest switch entries. Stringed entries were slower for speech entry due to the use of an isolated word recognizer. Speech technology seemed to offer speed and accuracy benefits when the targeting task was more cognitively loaded. The superior performance of targeting mode and weapon selection of voice-interaction, recommended the use of speech technology integration as the primary interface for these tasks. Given the even higher workload likely to be encountered in real world combat environments, where system visual-manual modalities are over-saturated, it is recommended that an overall sysem benefit for speech technology integration would be found.
