The unique design of ANVIS incorporates state-of-the-art technology in optics and mechanical components to achieve both high performance and ruggedness at minimum weight. The optical system takes advantage of precision injection molded plastic aspheric elements as well as glass elements fabricated from new lightweight glasses to provide high resolution and reduced complexity. Molded mechanical parts have been used which employ newly developed, high strength anti-friction plastics to provide smooth mechanical operation, precision fits for interchangability/maintainability, structural integrity and light weight. The ANVIS system can utilize either high performance second generation image intensifier tubes, or state-of-the-art third generation tubes.
