This paper summarizes the modeling of tracking performance in a compensatory SAM TV tracking task. A tracker model was proposed which consisted of a reduced-order observer, a linear state variable feedback controller, and a remnant element. Inside the zero deadband of the handwheel, an ad hoc nonlinear controller was designed to replace the linear controller. The ad hoc control in conjuction with the linear control can accurately describe a human's control and tracking response throughout the entire tracking horizon. The parameters of the model were determined via a least-squares minimization algorithm. Computer simulation results show that the model predictions of mean tracking error and standard deviation are in excellent agreement with empirical data for several flyby and maneuvering trajectories.
