High resolution, within-pulse, sector scanning sonars have advanced in both design and use since their initial development thirty years ago. They have found use in fisheries research and hydrographic survey (1,2), but the full potential has not been realised. The sonar display and analysis techniques, for instance, have remained substantially the same. The application of digital signal processing and recording systems allows much more use to be made of the basic sonar signals. The application of such a system to three scanning sonar facilities and the resulting enhancements are described.
