The test vehicle ML-500 which was researched and developed by the Japanese National Railways (JNR) as the leading promoter and private companies established a world speed record of 517 km/h at the Miyazaki Test Trackin December 1979. The maglev system employed at the Miyazaki Test Track is a linear synchronous motor (LSM) in which super-conducting magnets serve as field magnets mounted on the vehicle and ground coils for propulsion and guidance (GCPG) serve as armature coils and are arranged sequentially on the guideway. Hitachi contributed to the success of the test track by delivering a central control unit for vehicle speed control and a cyclo-converter to supply electric power to the GCPGs and also proposing the composite power supply system and other LSM control systems. The control system and running test results are described in this paper.
