The accurate and reliable measurement of bond stress in a solidpropellant rocket motor is a difficult task. Transducer sensing elements must be bonded to the nonlinear viscoelastic solid propellant, which is a highly corrosive material and experiences large material property changes with age and temperature variation. The rocket motor bond stress changes over a broad range during storage, thermal excursions, and ignition history. An optimal stress transducer would be infinitely small, have a rigid sensing system, have high sensitivity, and exhibit excellent mechanical and electrical stability with age. This paper presents some of the engineering results obtained in the evaluation of some current state-of-the-art stress transducers.
