The space shuttle will usher in an era of orbital mass transit when it becomes operational in the 1980s. Making the shuttle operational, however, requires massive testing of the on-board electronic systems (avionics). At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, a facility has been constructed that can fly an entire mission in simulation, from launch to landing, to test the avionics under all expected operating conditions.
