Distance measuring equipment (DME) has been widely used as ICAO-adopted air navigation aid. With increased air traffic density at a terminal area, a new type of DME equipment featuring low power, high accuracy, and economy is required for co-location with ILS and TVOR. This paper describes the low power DME NNG-645 developed for this purpose, covering the design philosophy, solutions of problems and the outline of the equipment. For distance measurement, the DME system is basically a secondary radar system, composed of an airborne interrogator and a ground transponder so that it measures round-trip time required for pulse signals to travel both ways between them. The transponder is composed of a receiver coder, a transmitter and accessory circuits.
