Slowly evolving nature of the man-machine interface for control of remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) is marked by a paradox. Scientists feel on the one hand that they now have a tremendous opportunity to design new systems from the ground up to fit the operator and the mission, unimpeded by past restrictions that have traditionally inhibited manned aircraft designers. On other hand they face a bewildering variety of interdependent and largely unresolved criteria that fundamentally affect every facet of system configuration. Need for firm answers to a series of highly interrelated basic questions underscores the complexity and scope of the challenge confronting designers of RPV control system.
