The use of reaction bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) as a material for diesel pistons for special applications has been evaluated. Pistons - all ceramic and composite ceramic/metallic - have been designed, manufactured and run in single cylinder super-charged diesel engines with conventional metallic piston rings and liners. Results are reported on piston endurance, piston temperatures and heat flow, engine efficiency and exhaust levels. Detailed thermo-mechanical (including 2-dimensional finite element) analysis has been carried out on piston designs. The consequences of the higher crown temperatures of ceramic (compared with conventional metallic) pistons are discussed.
