In the present study the multi-pass butt welding of austenitic stainless steel (SS) AISI 316L has been investigated. Two series of welding experiments were conducted, using different SS plate dimensions having the same thickness. Welding was performed via the flux cored arc welding process. During the welding process, measurements of both the thermal cycles and the out-of-plane deformation were performed. In the as-welded state, the residual stresses were determined with the hole-drilling method. The welded joints were subjected to complete metallographic inspection, which included observation in the optical (polarised optical microscopy or POM) and the electronic (scanning electron microscopy or SEM) microscope, as well as energy dispersive analysis. In addition, microhardness measurements along with the weld profile were carried out. Finally, a three-dimensional finite element numerical model was constructed, using the commercial code ANSYS®, in order to predict the spatial heat distribution, the residual stresses and the out-of-plane deformation of the multi-pass welding process. The model's accuracy was evaluated through comparison of its predictions with the experimental results.
