Abstract There is a need of continuous modernization of Polish railways and the introduction of innovative changes. Such a development strengthens the position of rail transport on the European market, improves the image of this mode of transport in the eyes of society and, above all makes it safer. Implementation of new computer’s solutions and microprocessor technology, microcomputers and the programmable controllers (PLC) is particularly important for management systems of train traffic. This is the inspiration for the new control of the rail traffic systems that provide high operational reliability, low power consumption, stability and safety of the trains’ movement. Intelligent Transport Systems specify the technical systems, which improve the functioning and development of transport, thanks to the implementation of information advanced technology. Implementation in Poland of modern European Railway Traffic Management System is a significant step in the development of ideas of Intelligent Transport Systems and safety of railway traffic.
