The integration of digital infrastructure into urban mobility networks has the potential to redefine interurban transportation for the foreseeable future. When traffic sensors, streetlights, and bus lines all connect via the Internet of things (IoT), a smart transportation network that maximizes efficiency emerges. Concurrently, a rise in rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft has changed the way people navigate cities by reducing the need to own a car. By creating more efficient public transit networks through an array of interconnected sensors and promoting ridesharing or car-sharing forms of transit, smart cities can reduce the presence of cars in cities which would in turn reduce carbon emissions and provide vast amounts of reclaimable space for urban improvement. This chapter introduces aspects related to the integration of mobility and digital means.
