After certain rail grinding processes, the subsequent train traffic seems to cause high tonal noises. Since residents’ complaints increased, the DB Netz AG set up the project noise-optimized rail grinding called “ZIP Lärmschleifen”. Acoustic rail roughness criteria directly after grinding were developed and defined, based on annoyance and tonality. The optimization of grinding procedures has been evaluated. Narrow band spectra of airborne noise and rail roughness were evaluated and merged into one diagram based on the speed of the train. The development of the rail roughness over 2 Mega Gross Tons leveling the rail has been evaluated. An acoustic quality inspection of the rail grinding using the DB Systemtechnik noise measurement train is possible. The acoustic grinding process optimization has been successful. The acoustic grinding process optimization has been successful. The annoyance of residents due to tonal noise after grinding can be reduced significantly.
