Adaptive Cycle Engine (ACE) can meet the contradictory requirement of low fuel consumption for cruising and high specific thrust, so it is considered one of the ideal candidates for the propulsion system of next generation fighter. By using one or more variable geometries, several different configurations of Adaptive Cycle Engine had been proposed. However, there are differences in the performance potential and mission execution ability of different configurations. And the choice of Adaptive Cycle Engine configuration for future flight mission remains a problem. Therefore, a Variable Cycle Engine (VCE) and two configurations of Adaptive Cycle Engine were selected in this paper and the influence of cycle parameters on performance was analyzed. Then, based on the possible combat technical indicators and flight mission requirements of future fighter, the design concept of aircraft/engine integration was used to design and compare Variable Cycle Engine, Adaptive Cycle Engine and mixed flow turbofan engine. The results indicated that “ACE-3Stream 1 + 2” and “ACE-3Bypass M3” have dual advantages in steady-state performance and aerodynamic stability within the flight envelope, achieving higher thrust and lower specific fuel consumption. Furthermore, it can enable the advantages in take-off weight and flight range when performing typical flight mission.
