Abstract Mankind is facing the twin challenges of sustainable energy supply and climate change due to the greenhouse gases emissions. Reducing the energy consumption has been given a significant role in addressing these problems. Although modern control technologies have been successfully applied in many engineering systems, PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control and its variants are still the most common control techniques due to their simple control design principle, especially in the power electronics control field. However, little has been done so far to explore how the system performance and control energy are related to each other through the control parameter settings. This paper takes the voltage droop (P) control design in voltage source converters (VSCs) system as the research background to investigate the parameter optimization of droop controllers. The simulation results reveal that there exists a better trade-off between the system performance and control energy consumption through a proper choice of the controller parameters.
