This paper studies the function of coconut tree roots as natural geosynthetics. Coconut tree toots have been used for thousands of years to reinforce Traditional Goan Saraswat Bunds (TGSB). They act as soil anchors, micropiles, and geo-reinforcement all at once. Being self-repairable, they can unlike synthetic geo-reinforcements self-repair after small damage. This paper studies the factor of safety of a 3 m high TGSB. It explains the improvement in factor of safety due to the various mechanisms such as RE wall, micropile, soil anchor, root pile, soil shear improvement, and soil nailing in which the coconut root acts as a natural geosynthetic. It analyzes with a special emphasis on soil nailing action and shows that the sliding safety increases by 320% while the global safety increases by 77.5%.
