Given a set of flights requesting access to the airspace, the FAA-NASA strategic deconfliction method requires analysis comparing the new flight to every other flight already scheduled in the area of flight, which is a 4D P-SAPCE-hard analysis. The lane-based strategic deconfliction method reduces this to a 1D problem simply based on delay of launch time. Two basic methods are presented for this 1D analysis: the label method and the backprojection method. These are shown to be low computational cost and applicable to any lane networks defined as described in the previous chapter. The Space–Time Lane Diagram is introduced as a convenient visualization tool for both monitoring flight schedules and comparing planned to actual trajectories.
